Booth7’s Tips for Cleaning and Caring for Your Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen is the heart of any home. Arguably, it’s one of the most frequently used rooms in your house if you’re an avid cook, yet for some reason, kitchen cabinet cleaning isn’t always a priority like other parts of the home. Kitchen cabinets contain items that your family uses on a daily basis such as plates, cups, and mugs. To keep your kitchen cabinets looking and functioning like new for a long time, it’s important to take the time to thoroughly clean them out on a regular basis.

When and Why Should You Clean Your Kitchen Cabinets?

Stop and think for a moment about how often you use your kitchen cabinets each day. Even if you don’t cook at home every day, it’s highly likely that you probably use your kitchen cabinets more often than you think you do. Opening and closing your kitchen cabinets to retrieve cups, mugs, plates, small appliances, etc. can put a lot of wear and tear on them. Plus, the dirt, oil or cleaning solution that may be on your fingers can stain your cabinets over time, not to mention you or your kids might have some food on your hands that can also transfer to the cabinets.

All of these things can add up over time and culminate in hard-to-remove stains on your kitchen cabinets. Caring for your cabinets is easy, though. We recommend that you implement a regular cleaning routine that includes weekly spot cleanings and occasional deep cleanings.

Spot cleanings involve wiping down the exterior of the cabinets with a slightly damp, soft cloth to remove surface stains. Never use chemicals or harsh abrasives like magic erasers, or products with coarse surfaces that will scratch the surface. Deep cleaning involves removing all of the contents and thoroughly wiping down the inside and outside of the cabinets from corner to corner. For optimal results, deep cleaning should be done at least three or four times a year.

Here are a few other tips for maintaining the appearance and functionality of your kitchen cabinets.

Caring for New Cabinets

After installation, wipe down the cabinets with a soft, damp cloth to remove any smudges and dust. Wipe in the direction of the wood or laminate grain and fully dry it immediately.

Repairing Nicks and Scratches

Accidents happen. Sometimes, you might accidentally nick the edge of your cabinet while placing heavy pots back into the drawers, or dropping utensils off the counter. It’s not a big deal, but nicks and scratches on painted surfaces should be repaired as they can make your kitchen cabinets look worn out.

Cleaning Wood Cabinets

If it’s real wood, use a high-quality polish that doesn’t have wax or silicone and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Polishing Exterior Fixtures

Don’t forget about the hardware! If you have metal hardware on your cabinets and drawers, make sure to give them a wipe every so often. Grease, dust and residue will build up in your hinges and this may transfer to the face of your doors or drawers. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference well maintained fixtures can make.
